The Crab, symbol of your sign of Cancer, has a tough shell and those claws can be formidable, too. A crab can be “crabby” at times, too—but it’s really because you care so very much—a “softy” inside. Though if anything or anybody you think of as yours is threatened…well, whomever or whatever is doing the threatening had better watch out! Cancer, more than any other Sun sign, is highly identified with maternal or paternal qualities. You take careful care of all that is yours. Home and farmily are primary, but your caring and emotional identification can also extend to patriotism or to a cause or a business—whatever you consider to be “yours.”
In a way, your crab shell that is also your home—a home that is always with you wherever you go. You have a strong desire for security. That may be why you acquire so many things and are reluctant to let them go, even if you no longer use them and the place is becoming cluttered. You probably have some extra money hidden away, too…just in case it’s needed. Unless other factors in your chart are strongly contradictory, you are just not a risk taker. Familiar territory is best, and there’s no place like home!
Your sign ruler is the Moon, and often your sign is referred to by the alternate title of “Moon Child.” Like the Moon in her constantly changing phases, your emotions vary through ups and downs. If you’re feeling especially low or upset, seek the soothing waters that are your natural element, be it a lovely warm bath or a walk by the sea, a lake or stream, or even a fountain…or a walk in the rain, and then a nice cup of tea.
You are naturally nurturing, like to feel needed, and may look after others to the point of neglecting your own needs, and this may bring about your own need for balance. There’s a type of dependency that can come of being too wrapped up in taking care of everyone else, if it means hiding your own vulnerability behind that crab shell when what you really need at the time is to let someone else help you.
Because you are so emotionally sensitive, you are also likely to be quite intuitive, and can pick up feelings around you. It that brings you down, the shell can be a shield. But you can also be an especially loyal, supportive and devoted friend, who develops warm and enduring relationships.

Jupiter , at the time when Sun enters Cancer is 2010, has just recently entered the sign of Aries, joining Uranus, also at this important cardinal point. Jupiter moves a bit ahead of Uranus, coming to almost 2 Aries as Sun enters Cancer. The 0 degree of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn) is important because it is the world axis. Transits there are said to represent issues of world-wide significance, so there’s been much speculation among astrologers as to what the gathering of outer planets at this axis this year might mean. This Sun sign feature describes outer planets one at a time, but it is difficult now to consider one without the others, so I’ll combine them somewhat in each section.
Jupiter combined with Uranus can be said to expand (Jupiter) the unexpected (Uranus), or it could be a beneficial (Jupiter) surprise (Uranus). But Aries is square to Cancer, so tension may be be involved. On the downside, expanding too much…spending too much (Jupiter) can cause tension (Uranus).
In solar houses, if put your Sun sign Cancer on house 1, then Jupiter is in your 10th house. The planet of expansion here could reflect a career opportunity or you might be favorably recognized for what you do. Taken alone, this could be a good time to push ahead in this area. With Uranus, perhaps a surprise opportunity or the tension that, to some degree, accompanies change, even when the change has the potential of benefit. As other outer planets move to the cardinal axis (as they do this year) other factors come into play.
Jupiter travels in Aries until early September, when it will then retrograde back into Pisces, a harmonious relationship to Cancer from your solar 9th house. This can be a time to learn, for foreign travel, or for matters relating to legal affairs, publishing or religion—9th house matters, all.
Jupiter returns to Aries in late January 2011, and advances steadily though the sign until entering Taurus just shortly prior to your next birthday. Take advantage of Jupiter’s energies for furthering career opportunities this year. Work hard and grow though accepting responsibility. Avoid defeating your purpose through too much ego investment—Jupiter themes can be overdone. Confidence in what you do becomes you; arrogance does not.

Saturn is in the very late degrees of Virgo, your solar Third House, and in a cooperating relationship to your Cancer Sun. Matters relating to your habits of thinking, your neighborhood or your siblings may require your responsible attention. But you have the ability to concentrate and persevere now, so to take well-considered steps toward what needs to be done.
On July 21st, Saturn moves to 0 Libra, thus joining Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto in the very early degrees of cardinal signs. Libra is your solar House Four, house of the home, so responsibility (a primary Saturn keyword) may be required in matters of home and family. Saturn will continue in Libra for your entire solar year, sometimes in close aspect to other outer planets, so pay attention to what is written for them, too. Saturn in Libra will oppose Jupiter in Aries. This could represent a challenge of home vs. career, and some kind of change may be necessary. Transform the challenge into cooperative change by considering well the practical matters involved in a manner that is fair to all involved. Playing well on the team and within the rules is important.
Among various potentials of your 4th house, Saturn here could mean that care for a parent could be asked of you, or a child comes into the home or leaves it. Or, it may be the physical home, itself, that you’ll be working on. Security of the home becomes important in one way or another when Saturn passes through this house, and some type of domestic change demands attention. A renovation could be another possibility. Outer matters, though, are often just outer symptoms of the need to “get one’s house in order” in an inner way, as well, so if problems there have been suppressed, this may be the time to deal with them. Whatever the issue, Saturn calls for the acceptance of responsibility.

Uranus remains in Pisces, where it has been for quite sometime, through this solar year until nearly the end of it, when it enters Aries on the as said above under Jupiter, is at the zero degree of Aries, the world axis, at the time of all Cancer birthdays this year. Uranus themes include freedom, independence, tension, innovation, surprise, revolution and can involve events that are upsetting and disruptive. Certainly, in the news at this writing, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to be a source of disruption and tension with very widespread impact…and while this is primary now, its not that difficult to imagine other potential manifestation of Uranus on the cardinal axis.
On the personal level, we’ve seen above how the Jupiter-Uranus combination in your solar house 10 might work to your advantage, if you’re ready for it and plan wisely for the right career move. Uranus (in your solar 10th) in opposition to Saturn (your solar 4th) can represent a challenge or a test in regard to these basic principles: stability (Saturn) vs change (Uranus), or the old (Saturn) vs the new (Uranus). There could be an issue of limitation (Saturn) vs freedom (Uranus) that you’ll be required to deal with. Uranus represents upsets or tension in matters that seemed solid (Saturn), and the tension has to be released some way. Somehow a balance needs to be found. Disciplined creative work can yield excellent results because it effectively combines the basic principles of the Saturn-Uranus opposition. Be willing to release what isn’t working in your life and thus allow the space for new things to come in and grow.
Uranus retrogrades back into Pisces mid-August, turns direct in early December and returns to Aries in mid-March 2011. During all this return time to Pisces, Uranus will be in the very late degrees of Pisces (26-28) and in the 9th solar house for Cancer. . This trine relationship to the late degrees of Cancer may, as last year, relate to intuitive flashes and sudden insights. Flow with it and expand your thinking.

Neptune continues to poke his way through the latter degrees of Aquarius throughout nearly all of this solar year (as he did the last). This is your solar House Eight. If your Sun is in the late degrees of Cancer, especially, your may experience the transit as restlessness and feeling pulled between sticking to what’s familiar and wanting to try something new, and perhaps in just feeling tired. Or, there may be something confusing or prone to misunderstanding going on, perhaps related to issues of sharing. Be especially cautious if financial matters are involved, making sure things are handled properly and in writing.
Compassion is aroused with Neptune transits and imagination is enhanced. This can be fine, if applied toward creative art, for example, but potentially problematic in mundane matters. Meditation is a good practice for relaxation, and for better understanding of what’s going on and how to work well through it.
In early April of 2011, Neptune, god of the sea, will finally pass on into Pisces, the sign for which he is modern ruler. The sign of Pisces is trine to Cancer, and as said above with Uranus, is your solar 9th house. Neptune in House 9 can mean seeking transcendence though spiritual truth. You may idealize your beliefs, or you may come into this transit feeling that you have the answers, but then one day leave it wondering if there are any ultimate answers. You’re likely to be exposed to ideas that call into question what you’ve thought to be true. It’s a time to be compassionate and open toward others’ ideas as you continue to seek new mystical truths yourself. But…this is a short lived transit for this solar year. Neptune is not quite through with Aquarius yet.

Pluto continues in early Capricorn, traveling retrograde from 4 to 3 degrees on 2010’s Cancer birthdays. He turns direct at 2 degrees in mid-September and will be at the 6th degree on your 2011 birthday. For Cancer Suns in the early degrees, the aspect is a square, definitely challenging, and indicative that something in your life is almost surely undergoing change. Since Capricorn is in a 7th house relationship to your Sun, this could be in the area of partnership, either personal or business. Or if not that, it is suggestive of a balancing act going on in the house polarity to whatever area of life your Sun highlights.
Any Pluto transit to the Sun has to do with how you handle your personal power. If your Sun is in the early degrees of Cancer, this transit is especially significant for you this year. Something in your life needs to be redefined, eliminated, transformed or rejuvenated. Especially if your Sun is in early Cancer, you probably already know what this is, even if you’ve not yet quite admitted it, even to yourself. If you don’t know what it is, you’ll sooner or later attract someone or something into your life that will bring it to your attention. Just keep this in mind: the key to success in any Pluto transit is to claim your own power to change what needs to be change. It’s about SELF-mastery and SELF-control. Open yourself to the possibilities of transformation and you can be reborn into a more fulfilling life.
That Pluto remains within the first few degrees of Capricorn this year means that this transformative planet of power and control also mixes into the gathering of outer planets around the world axis, and that is more than likely to be of some importance to all of us as it reflects world events. Though not exactly conjunct the cardinal axis, Pluto is close enough to it to matter in his square to Jupiter-Uranus in Aries and to Saturn in Libra. His theme adds power to the theme of each of the others, and power is just power. Whether it is “good” or “bad” depends upon how it is used. We can all keep that in mind as we resolve to handle changes in our lives well and with consideration for others.
