NEW MOON REPORT
by Maritha Pottenger
January 6, 2000

As a New Year dawns (and a new decade, century and millennium--depending on how you are counting!), we naturally look to the future. We contemplate our goals and make our resolutions to help create a happy, healthier year ahead. Astrology can be a helpful aid in that process of personal analysis, goal-setting, and projecting ahead. The patterns in the heavens can help us understand the patterns on earth, and improve our timing so we can go more with the cosmic flow!

New Moon at 15 Capricorn 44, January 6 at 10:14 AM PST.
The opportunity for initiation and new beginnings will center around the physical world, especially matters relating to career, ambitions, and status. Now is the time to begin a new chapter in regard to your contributions to society, your expertise or role as an authority figure. Pay attention to the bottom line. Common sense, pragmatism and hard work are favored. This New Moon is particularly potent for people born around January 14-18; April 13-18; July 6-11; and October 7-12.

Saturn turns Direct Tuesday, January 11 at 8:02 PM PST.
With the ruler of Capricorn beginning a new cycle, the emphasis on duty, responsibility, dedication, discipline, and generating tangible results will continue. Your energies are best focused on vocational matters or practical concerns. Be very realistic and grounded. Keep clear boundaries. With Saturn, it is important to know what you can do, cannot do, and must do. The challenge is to carry out your own responsibilities, but to refuse to carry the load for other people. Let them learn their own lessons and develop their own strength and competence through concentrated effort and sensible achievement.

Mercury enters Aquarius Tuesday, January 18 at 2:20 PM PST.
Turn on that thinking cap! You can be more original, inventive and innovative with your mind. Go ahead and break some of the rules. Question conventions. Overturn assumptions. Challenge dogmas. Now is the time to think "outside the box", to brainstorm or allow divergent perspectives a chance. You may come up with valuable insights or sudden understanding. Classes, reading and studies pertaining to astrology, the new age, computers, technology or anything on the cutting edge of change are favored.

Sun enters Aquarius Thursday, January 20 at 10:23 AM PST.
Be yourself! Where the Sun is, we need to shine, so individuality holds the stage. The time is ripe to affirm your unique qualities, and to admire and applaud what is special in other people as well. Excitement and drama are tied to what is new and progressive. You may take risks and challenge the status quo. Positive attention comes through the mind, originality, and tuning into the future.

Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse at 0 Leo/Aquarius 26 Thursday, January 20 at 8:42 PM PST.
This eclipse brings up several polarity issues in our lives calling for balance. We’ll seek that golden mean between head and heart, passion and intellect, detachment and emotional intensity. We’ll need to find a middle ground between freedom and closeness, between being independent and having loving relationships, between pursuing our own path and loving and being loved. And, we’ll take turns devoting ourselves to both friends and lovers; children and the wider world; personal hobbies and future possibilities. With integration, we can love without possessiveness, encouraging ourselves and those we care about to be warm and passionate as well as bright and objective.

Venus enters Capricorn Monday, January 24 at 11:52 AM PST.
As the planet of love and pleasure enters the realm of hard work and realism, we need to be grounded in our relationships. You may decide to make a commitment - to "make it real". Less constructively, love could feel like an awful lot of effort, or we may feel deprived, shortchanged, criticized or dominated by others. The best way to direct this combination is to put much effort into doing a good job sharing with others, to be practical in our expectations in relationships, and to balance ease and effort, duty and pleasure, in our lives.

Jupiter sesqui-quad Pluto Tuesday, January 25 at 7:19 PM PST.
We may go overboard with sensuality, money matters, power struggles, or the quest for control. Excesses are possible in regard to joint resources or interactions with intimate others. More constructively, we can use faith and confidence to assist sharing and business ventures that depend partially on support from other people. We can pursue dreams and high hopes (Jupiter) with perseverance (Pluto).

Mercury enters Pisces Saturday, February 5 at 0:09 AM PST.
As the planet of communication enters the sign of imagination, our thoughts turn to fancy. Fiction may win over facts. Beauty may beat out clarity. Evasion and avoidance may be preferred to straight-out declarations. This combination is excellent for poetry, beautiful language, compassionate words, and empathic understanding.
